Street Soles vs. Suede Soles: How to Choose the Right Dance Heels for Your Floor, Style, and Safety

16 Oct 2026 0 comments

Choose a suede sole if you dance mostly on clean, dry studio dance floors, and a street sole if you dance at venues, on stages that are not dance floors, or outdoors. Suede slides when you turn, which lowers the twisting load on your legs. A street sole grips more and survives rough ground, but adds twist when you pivot on a dance floor.

What is the difference between a suede sole and a street sole?

A suede sole is a layer of suede leather on the bottom of the shoe. Its napped surface slides on a dance floor and wears out quickly on rough or wet ground. A street sole is a harder outsole made for walking surfaces. On Queenalia shoes the two options are labeled "Suede Sole (Dance Floor Only)" and "Street Sole", and every style is offered with either one.

Suede sole Street sole
On a dance floor Slides on turns More grip

Care Brush; keep dry Wipe clean

Why does the sole matter for your knees and ankles?

When your foot cannot rotate with you, the floor twists your leg instead. Two studies measured this:

  • In 15 dancers doing a turning step, rubber-bottom boots and running shoes had more friction than leather-bottom boots, and the twisting load (free moment) on the turning leg was lowest in the leather-bottom boots [1].
  • In 13 athletes, a high-traction tread shoe raised peak ankle rotation load from 80.2 to 89.6 N·m and peak knee adduction load from 186.8 to 224.0 N·m compared with a smoother shoe [2].

Turning is a common moment for ankle injuries. Among 198 elite young dancesport athletes, turning was involved in 46.9% of ankle sprains [3].

Which sole to choose for each floor.

When to choose suede sole dance heels and when street soles

Floor Sole
Wood studio floor Suede
Vinyl dance floor (marley) Suede; check the studio's rules
Social venue with a dance floor Suede, if clean and dry
Bar, club or event floor Street
Tile or stone Street
Outdoor stage, street, parking lot Street

A floor that is wet, sticky or dusty changes how any sole behaves. If you cannot pivot cleanly, make turns smaller.

Which sole for which dance style?

  • Heels class in a studio: suede. Our dance boots come with either sole.
  • Salsa and bachata socials: suede on a dance floor; street for patios, congress hallways or outdoor events. Our Latin sandals use a 3, 3.3 or 3.5-inch flared heel.
  • Music videos, shows and travel: street, because you do not know the floor in advance.

If you dance in both settings, a pair of each lets you keep the suede pair for dance floors only.

Every Queenalia boot, like the Lanthe, is offered with a suede or street sole.

How do you look after each sole?

Suede soles

  • Put the shoes on at the venue, not at home.
  • When the suede goes flat and shiny, brush it with a suede or wire shoe brush.
  • If the sole gets wet, blot it dry and let it air-dry at room temperature, away from heaters and hairdryers.

Street soles

  • Wipe with a damp cloth after outdoor or club use.
  • Check that grit is not stuck in the sole before you dance on a studio floor.

FAQ

Can I wear suede sole dance heels outside?

Our suede soles are labeled Dance Floor Only. Rough and wet ground wears the suede down. Choose the Street Sole for outdoor use.

Why do my knees hurt after dancing in fashion heels?

Many fashion heels have rubber soles that grip the floor. In the studies above, higher-traction soles raised twisting loads on the ankle and knee [1][2]. Heel height also matters. If pain continues, see a doctor or physiotherapist.

Is a street sole a good choice for heels class?

It works if your studio allows it, but expect more grip on turns than with suede. Ask your teacher which sole the studio floor is meant for.

How tight should new dance heels be?

Snug, with the heel held in place when you rise onto the ball of the foot. Use our size chart and the fit check in how to dance in heels without hurting your feet.
